In cases where a patent practitioner needs to work on a patent application they did not file (e.g., an application filed by the inventor or an application transferred from a different firm), the application is transferred to or between EFS customer numbers by filing a Power of Attorney (POA). When a new POA is processed, it revokes all previous POAs which removes the application from the previous customer number accounts and transfers the application to the new customer number account listed in the new POA. I typically file a POA by submitting form PTO/AIA/82A "TRANSMITTAL FOR POWER OF ATTORNEY TO ONE OR MORE REGISTERED PRACTITIONERS" and form PTO/AIA/82B "POWER OF ATTORNEY BY APPLICANT."
